2025 King Tides Forecast: What South Florida Residents Need to Know

The 2025 King Tide season has officially begun, and with it comes both beauty and risk for South Florida’s coastal communities. To help residents and stakeholders stay informed, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is publishing a Weekly Tidal Outlook every Monday, starting September 1.

These updates are designed to keep you up to date on tidal conditions, flood risks, and sea level trends throughout the season.

🌊 What Are King Tides?

King Tides are the highest predicted tides of the year, caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun. They typically occur during the fall months when the Earth, moon, and sun align during new and full moon phases.

While naturally occurring, King Tides are becoming more significant in South Florida because of rising sea levels and changing weather patterns.

đź“… 2025 King Tide Peak Dates in South Florida

According to the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the highest tides of the season are forecasted on these dates (timing varies by location):

  • September 6–12 (Full Moon)
  • September 19–25 (New Moon)
  • October 3–25 (Full & New Moon)
  • November 1–10 (Full Moon)
  • November 18–20 (New Moon)
  • December 2–7 (Full Moon)

During these periods, tides are expected to approach the National Weather Service’s “Minor Flooding” threshold, which can impact streets, drainage systems, and low-lying properties.

🌎 Why King Tides Matter in South Florida

South Florida’s unique geography—700 miles of shoreline and 40+ gravity coastal structures—makes it especially vulnerable to high-tide flooding events. These tides, combined with rainfall or storm surge, can increase flood risk in communities across Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Monroe, Collier, and Lee counties.

King Tides provide a preview of what higher sea levels could look like in the future, making monitoring and preparation critical for residents, homeowners, and policymakers.

🔬 Enhanced Tidal Forecasting in Partnership with the University of Miami

Since 2022, the South Florida Water Management District has partnered with the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science to improve forecasting models.

The Weekly Tidal Outlook Forecast now integrates:

  • Sea level rise projections
  • Meteorological conditions (wind speed, wind direction)
  • Oceanic factors (swell energy, sea surface temperature)

These advanced models give residents more accurate and localized forecasts compared to traditional NOAA predictions.

📍Key Monitoring Stations

Automated King Tide forecasts are now available through the SFWMD’s Resilience Metrics Hub, tracking water levels across seven tidal stations:

  • Virginia Key
  • Port Everglades
  • Lake Worth
  • Key West
  • Vaca Key
  • Naples / Naples Bay North
  • Fort Myers

âś…How to Stay Prepared

If you live in flood-prone neighborhoods or near the shoreline, here are practical steps to protect your property during King Tide season:

  • Sign up for SFWMD Weekly Tidal Outlook emails
  • Check local flood maps and insurance coverage
  • Elevate valuable belongings in low-lying areas of your home
  • Monitor weather forecasts, especially during heavy rain and hurricane season
  • Consider long-term resilience strategies, such as floodproofing or elevating structures

The 2025 King Tides Forecast is more than just a calendar of high tides—it’s a critical tool for understanding flood risks and climate resilience in South Florida. With advanced forecasting, partnerships with the University of Miami, and weekly updates from the District, residents can make informed decisions to stay safe and protect their property.

🌊 South Florida is resilient, and preparation is the key to thriving in a changing environment.
